Dean's Welcome

Hello!

Ron W. Darbeau, Ph.D.

Welcome to the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at UAFS! The college has six departments: Biological Science, Engineering, Computer and Information Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and the School of Education, and boasts an excellent, committed faculty and staff as well as an outstanding student body. As the new dean, I am thrilled to lead the college along its path of continuous quality improvement, increased scholarship by the faculty and students, and enhancement of curricula and infrastructure. Modern education is a smorgasbord of opportunities and challenges for students, traditional and non-traditional, seeking to improve their prospects and their lives. The conjoined worlds of education and employment have changed dramatically in the last decade, but the landscape remains one that is rich and navigable for those who are motivated and courageous enough to strive for personal excellence. At the nexus of these worlds – at the “sweet spot” of the connection – lie the STEM and Education disciplines. Competence in these areas endows individuals with lifelong, sought-after skills and versatility that make them contributing members of an increasingly complex society and valuable employees in the workplace. If you are a supporter of, or an advocate for, the college, I am grateful to you for recognizing and valuing the tremendous educational opportunities it provides and I applaud your boldness and vision for investing in a brighter, better future for us all. STEM graduates join a sacred family that literally stands between humanity and disease, famine, and disaster, and propels mankind forward to newer, better discoveries. Graduates from the School of Education play crucial roles in kindling and nurturing young minds to develop a thirst for knowledge, a respect for views other than one’s own, critical thinking skills, and the ability to integrate and appropriately use knowledge from across a wide continuum. In short, School of Education graduates prepare the next generation to take its place upon life’s stage. Make no mistake – if your intention is to change the world for the better, this ... is where it starts. If your dream is to make a positive impact on society, broadly defined, then this … is where you sign up! We are seeking students from across all segments of the socio-cultural spectrum, who are willing to work hard, who are eager to discover their own personal boundaries – and then push past them – who are unafraid of challenges, who are willing to ask the hard questions, or have such questions asked of them and then pursue the answers, with diligence and integrity, wherever they might lead. We are looking for you! If you think you have what it takes … seize this opportunity. Join us and take this next step toward maximizing your potential – toward fulfilling your destiny. Let us be the platform that launches you to your best and future self. Join us, and together, let us see your dreams become reality.
